The Clotilde Perfect Pleater
The Clotilde Perfect Pleater is a vintage-style plastic board from the 1990s designed to help sewists create neat, even pleats, ruffles, and smocking in fabric or ribbon. Its grooved slots guide folds at 1/4", 1/2", 3/4", or 1" intervals, making it easy to form slightly overlapping pleats. It can be used for trim, rosettes, heirloom sewing, and other decorative projects.
To use it, lay your fabric on the pleater and use a thin, stiff tool (like a credit card or small ruler) to tuck the fabric consecutively into the louvers. Once tucked, cover the fabric with a damp press cloth (some crafters use a water and vinegar solution for a stronger hold), and press with a hot iron. Crucially, let the fabric completely cool inside the pleater before removing it so the pleats set properly.
